I spent 9 months in Thailand in the Peace Corps many years ago, and visited the LOS again last May. I have started fantasizing about retiring there, so I bought “The Bangkok Survivor’s Handbook” to add more fact to my fantasy. Most guidebooks are a struggle for me to read, but this one is such fun that I finished it in one sitting, interrupted only by supper.
It is definitely targeted at individuals who are considering living in Thailand for an extended period, rather than visiting as tourists, and where it is location-specific, it refers primarily to Bangkok, but there is still a wealth of detail on virtually everything one would need to know to move to Thailand for more than just a vacation. And based on my limited experience, RH did not make any claims or statements that I considered to be wrong or inaccurate.
Topics addressed include, but are not limited to, obtaining and renewing visas, finding and renting an apartment, obtaining medical care, work opportunities, shopping, dining, internet service, English-language schools [for English-speaking families with children], banks and transferring money, etc.
The most delightful aspect to TBSH however, is that the writing is very good. It flows smoothly, with a comfortable but not excessive level of humor, and I did not note any sentences that I had to read twice to make sense of them! It is reasonably current, having been published in January of 2003, and includes many web sites and e-mail addresses for those who want to learn more. Best in Class!!

Many of women travel books state that the writing are humorous, but the stories aren’t funny. Others have women lamenting over how she looks in a bathing suit or a romantic breakup, neither of which has anything to do with the place they’re visiting or the people they meet. Thankfully this book only has one story that fit the second fault stated above. It’s “Homecoming Istanbul” by Banu Francoise Hummel.

The other essays are wonderfully descriptive and expressive stories of each woman’s interactions with the people, cities, countries, and sites. I got a sense of the sensations and experiences that the writers were trying to convey.

I felt the sogginess, sexiness and coldness of the rains in France, Mexico and Scotland; the gritty sand in the Taklamakan desert; again coldness in Italy; fear in the Amazon and Botswana; and learned that there are many different types of trips in Jamaica.

Each story was so delightful (except the one written in Turkey) that I couldn’t wait to read the next one. These stories inspired me to want to go to places I never considered before, which a true travel book should instill in it’s readers.

Great job to all the essayists and the editor, Lucy McCauley.

I bought this book in Bangkok during my trip to Thailand because: 1. I want to have it as a souvenir picture book for keepsake, and 2. I want to see where else I can go to when I visit Thailand next time. Thailand is so big and diverse, my 2-week trip was obviously not long enough for me to see everything. This book is perfect because it is not too long that would scare away some people, but it provides very captivating descriptions of attractions with maps and web links at the back of the book if you wish to explore them in more details.

This is NOT a book for history or geography buffs who wish to learn about Thailand in detail. This is more like a movie trailer that let you know about the exciting things that exist there and make you want to go and experience it yourself. The book is divided by regions: The North, North East, Central, Bangkok, and South Thailand. Each region then briefly introduces its history and some of its most popular cities and districts with tons of amazing pictures with captions that tell you what and where it is. There are also pages that talk about traditions and cultural festivals and when they are held — a good info for those who wish to see more.

After reading it for a couple minutes, I found myself fascinated by pages after pages of large, beautiful pictures and paragraphs that never cease to generate my interest in visiting this place. I highly recommend this book.
